Preamble to the poll tax return

Here is the preamble to the Poll Tax return.

This Indenture made the tenth day of November Anno dni 1641 and in the seaventeenth yeare of the reigne of or soveraigne Lord Charles by the grace of God of England Scotland France and Ireland King defener of the ffaith Betweene our said soveraigne Lord Charles of the one part and John Pellin gent Sheriff of the City of Canterbury of the other part Witnesseth Clive Carter esq Mayor of the said Citty of Canterbury ffrancis Lovelace esq Recorder of the same City William Man & Thomas Courthop esq Avery Sabin and James Master Aldermen Commissioners for or said sovereign Lord the King amongst others authorized and appointed wthin the County of the said City for the taxing leaviyng and payment of the pole money granted to his Matie in this present Parliament by an Act entituled An Act for the speedy provision of money for disbanding the Army and setling the peace of the two Kingdoms of England & Scotland have according to the tenor of the said Act caused all the inhabitants wthin the said Citty as well English & Alyens chargeable by the said Act to be valued rated and taxed towards the payment of the said Pole money The particular names and sirnames of every wch Inhabitants are here under written in this present Indenture And be it knowne that ye County of the said Citty wthin the liberty thereof is separated and divided into six severall Wards that is to say the ward of Westgate the ward of Northgate the ward of Burgate the ward of Newingate the ward of Ridingate and the ward of Worgate the said wards are divided into fowreteen severall parishes that is to say the parishes of St Peters and Holicrosse, the parishes of All Saints, St Mary Bredman, St Mary Northgate, St Alphage, St Mary Magdalen, St Paules, St Martins, St Georges, St Andrewes, St Mary Breddyn, St Margaretts, & St Mildreds.
