First Supervisor: Dr Sheila Sweetinburgh | Chair: Dr David Hitchcock

Research Summary

It will explore the under-researched area of charity in the lower Medway Valley. It will draw together some previous scholarship that has been done on the St Bartholomew Hospital, Rochester and Watts Charity also of Rochester. It will expand on my previous work looking at the life of the Rev. Caleb Parfect (https://repository.canterbury.ac.uk/item/8vq1x/the-reverend-caleb-parfect-person-power-publishing)

This is a unique opportunity to bring the social history of one of the greatest areas of industrial activity in Kent to life and will play an important role in understanding how the Kings Yard at Chatham affected the local economy and the charities that supported that.

More information about Peter

I am a mature student that has lived in the lower Medway valley most of my life. This project comes out of both my connection to the dockyard and previous research into poverty in the area. The project is inspired and driven by my own beliefs in justice and a fair world.
