Kent-Related Research Interests

My research on the East Kent folk custom of hoodening includes creative engagement with the practice, including responsive writing, devising and performing, and public workshops. This research builds on the ACE and NLHF funded project 'Celebrating the Kentish Hooden Horse' (2023).

My creative practice research also involves site-specific writing and site-responsive writing. My novel in progress is inspired by an East Kent location and the layers of tangible and intangible heritage connected with a single site. As part of a collaborative project with Sussex-based artist Emily Allchurch, I am undertaking a year of monthly walks in Kent, generating sited creative walking pieces. Each walk is inspired by an image from the artist's series 'Closer to Home'. The project engages with creative and attentive walking practices through photographic collage and ambulant writing, exploring connections across these two South East counties.
