Aphra Behn was born in Canterbury in 1640. She was a celebrated playwright, poet and novelist and the first professional woman writer in English. The Victorians disapproved: she was too outspoken, too rude, and despite her remarkable achievements she slipped out of the public imagination. ‘Canterbury’s Aphra Behn’ is a year-long celebration of all things Aphra, to bring her the recognition she deserves and restore her as a daughter of Canterbury.
The project aims to bring her to a whole new audience, raise her profile, and establish her as an iconic historical figure, as well as a source of local pride. Supported by several local groups including ‘A is for Aphra’ and the Aphra Behn Society of Canterbury, the year of activities and events will include exhibitions, plays, walks, music and public lectures: a festival for everyone to enjoy.
A collaboration between Loughborough University and Canterbury Christ Church University, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
